• Course Description:

    In Commercial & Advertising Art, students learn to communicate to mass audiences, promoting products, events and ideas. Students use design principles, typography, illustration and computer skills to produce effective graphic communications. From television to cereal boxes, the visually propelling display of information dominates our modern lives. Never before has Advertising Design been at once so important and so pervasive.

    Skills Learned:

    At the Central Westmoreland Career & Technology Center, you will develop the problem‐solving skills and conceptual thought processes that will prepare you for professional success in this dynamic area that spans many careers in the visual imaging field. In our visually oriented society, graphic designers benefit from an array of career opportunities in advertising, publishing, and other communications fields. The Commercial & Advertising Art Program trains graphic designers to creatively solve problems while acquiring the specific skills and experience they need to design magazine layouts, brochures, packaging, or corporate logos.

    Related Occupations and Earnings:

    Related occupations include Graphic Designer, Multimedia Producer, Multimedia Authoring Fashion Design, and Artist Educator.Earnings range between $12-$21/hour.

    Post-Secondary Opportunities:

    Articulated credits can be earned toward an Associate’s Degree at Institutions such as Commonwealth Technical Institute, Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology and Westmoreland County Community College.

    Grading Procedures:
    15% bookwork, tests, quizzes, lectures, and 85% hands-on competency based work experience through practical in-shop projects.

    Art Courses, Typing Courses, Algebra I & II, Geometry, College Prep English I-IV
