Painting, Wallcovering, and Design
Course Description
Painting and Decorating is available to all high school students interested in learning the fundamentals of exterior and interior painting, interior decorating and design, wood finishing and refinishing, drywall finishing, texturing, spray painting, and faux finishing. Students learn through a combination of theory and hands-on training. They apply paint to the interior and exterior surfaces of walls and buildings for the purpose of protection and decoration. Students are taught how to properly use brushes, rollers, and spray equipment. Decorative wallpaper, borders, vinyls, fabric, and other materials will be applied to walls giving students an opportunity to utilize actual procedures and skills. Related math teaches the students how to measure properly ,estimate and plan work. This course stresses the development of sound work habits and the understanding of labor and management. It provides knowledge of materials and their uses, while exposing students to the proper and safe use of equipment and tools.
Units of Study
Units of study include; lettering and layout, wall covering, borders, surface preparation, spray painting, care of tools and safety using ladders and scaffold, estimating, sealants, roller techniques, interior decorating and design, wallboard finishing, texturing, brush application, exterior painting, interior painting, color fundamentals, wood finishing, refinishing, and faux finishing.
National Certification
The NCCER (National Center for Construction Education & Research) maintains an automated registry of modules (crafts, skills assessments) for online access for current & potential employees' training history.
Grading Procedures
The grading procedure is as follows; 20% classroom theory, tests, and quizzes; 20% work ethic (attendance, uniform, and attitude) as well as 60% actual shop projects and competencies. Students Earn 1 credit of math each year in grades 9, 10, and 11.
Student Requirements
The student requirements are as follows: attend regularly, complete a minimum number of competencies, purchase painters' overalls, work shoes (hard shoes), a work shirt, and a notebook, pen, and pencil.
Some Skills You Will Learn
Some skills a student is sure to learn in this shop are; interior decorating and design, texturing, floor plan placement, cost analysis, stain application, functional use of space, priming a surface, wallboard finishing, estimating materials, lettering, planning a job, spray painting, varnish application, furniture refinishing, brush & roll techniques, surface preparation, application of wall coverings, and color mixing and matching.
