Course Description
In the face of change stands the never-ending world of work. Through hard work and dedication, Central Westmoreland Career and Technology Center is proud to announce the merger of an established program with the arrival of one of our newest programs.
The Powerline/TEC 2000+ Academy is dedicated to delivering rigorous workforce preparedness through knowledge, skills, and attributes required for a specific cluster occupation through completion of a career and technology program. The Powerline/TEC 2000+ Academy is a Pennsylvania Certified Standards-Based Career and Technology Program and compiles with the Public School Code of 1949 regulations.
Students who are interested more in the telecommunications component of the academy will learn: how to install, erect, and troubleshoot networks, computer networks, video systems, and fiber optics. The students will learn the fundamentals of electricity and electronics, as well as, utilize new lab facilities and computer related equipment.
Students who are interested in pursuing a career in aerial linework will want to select the Powerline component of the academy. This segment of the academy prepares students for a rewarding career in helping to build and maintain America's power grid and communication infrastructures. After completing this part of the academy, the only one offered to high school students in Pennsylania, students might start as an apprentice line technician and through more "on-the-job" experience, graduate to journeyperson status.
A lineperson's work is physically demanding, dangerous, and challenging. If you like to work with your head and your hands, if you enjoy the outdoors, if you except the challenge of the line technicians work, then join the line technicians training course and except the rewards.
The Powerline Academy builds skills from the ground up. Your skills will ennable you to work in all phases of construction and maintainence. You will enjoy the satisfaction of building the entire project everyday, building something where there was nothing. It's a great feeling! You will be helping to solve America's urgent electrical power needs.
To work in this profession you must be willing to travel, not only to gain initial employment, but as part of the overall profession. Your profession may take you anywhere in the United States. The pay is great. Starting financial compensation for aprentices is approximately 60% of a journeyperson ($33.00 x .60 = $19.80 per hour) and generally goes up in 5% increments as you gain knowledge and experience.
Students will participate in a structured classroom environment, which will include: safety, written assignments, electrical theory, classroom disscussion, and hands-on application in a laboratory environment. Students will also develop math skills and employability skills.

Career Pathway
Students who complete the Powerline/TEC 2000+ Academy can look forward to many rewarding careers such as: residential, commercial, and industrial electrician, telephone technician, computer network wiring technician, fiber optic technician, security and fire alarm technician, aerial power line person, aerial telephone line person, cable television line person, and many more. The Powerline/TEC 2000+ Academy also has an articulation agreement with the Westmoreland County Community College (WCCC). Please see your guidance counselors for more information.
Employability
In the Powerline/TEC 2000+ Academy, qualified students have the opportunity to participate in co-op, job shadowing, and internships, all designed to provide actual work experience prior to graduation. Students may earn a salary while employed and gain credit towards graduation.
The Powerline/TEC 2000+ Academy is active in assisting students to find employment upon graduation. Assistance in job search techniques and resume preparation are available to all graduates.
