Health Occupations

Course Description

The Health Occupations Program at Central Westmoreland Career and Technology Center provide students in grades 9-12 with basic knowledge of a variety of health care careers. The course is designed to provide basic theory, as well as assisting the student with developing self-discipline, encouraging personal growth, acceptance of responsibility, and the development of sound ethical attitudes and behavior.

Upon completion of the course, students will be qualified to function in the health care field with job entry skills under the supervision of professionally trained persons such as a doctor,a dentist or registered nurse.

Students interested in the Health Occupations program should be in good physical health, have the ability to work with others, a genuine interest in patient care, motivation to learn and an attitude that shows maturity and responsibility.


Units of Study

Students will study an overview of various health occupations, an introduction to medical terminology, medical insurance/billing, and management of a medical office. Students gain knowledge of hands-on patient care, anatomy and physiology as well as medical ethics.

The Health Occupations program provides qualified students with the opportunity to participate in our Pennsylvania Department of Education approved nurse aide training program. Students who successfully complete this theory and clinical based program are eligible to sit for the competency evaluation exam for the state registry of nurse aides. This is sometimes referred to as the CNA exam.


Grading Procedures

Student's grades are 1/3 theory ( tests,quizzes, and work work), 1/3 lab skills, and 1/3 daily grades. Health Occupation students ear 3 credits in grades 10, 11, 4 credits in grade 12 toward graduation.

Some Relate Courses

Suggested related courses include; typing, English, biology, chemistry and business math.


Student Requirements


The student requirements are the purchase of a scrub-type uniform, white uniform shoes, crew length white socks, a 3-inch ring binder, a watch with a sweep hand as well as a basic function calculator.


Student Cost

The student cost is only for the student requirements listed above and health insurance during the nurse aide clinical experience.


Some Related Occupations

Some relate occupations include, but are not limited to: registered nurse, licensed practical nurse, medical secretary, physical therapy assistant, occupational therapy assistant, medical assistant,  nurse aide, massage therapist and medical assistant.


Some Skills You Will Learn

Students are certified in standard first aid, adult, infant and child CPR/AED. Other skills include: using medical equipment, maintaining medical records, obtaining and recording vital signs, total patient care, and infection control procedures.
