Adult Evening School

Adult Evening classes are offered twice each year, beginning in September and in late January. Occupational skill development is the focus of most classes; however, some classes are offered just for the enjoyment of the participant. All classes are competency based and include hands on instruction as well as theory presentations.

Registration is required and all tuition must be paid prior to the beginning of the class. Textbooks are ordered on the first night of class. Tuition varies depending upon the length of the class.

Complete the form and mail it along with your payment to Central Westmoreland Career and Technology Center, Evening School Division, 240 Arona Road, New Stanton, PA 15672. Make payment payable to Central Westmoreland Career and Technology Center.

Central Westmoreland Career and Technology Center reserves the right to change instructors, schedules as necessary. CWCTC also reserves the right to cancel classes due to insufficient enrollment. Refunds will be made in a timely manner if the class is canceled. No refunds will be issued after the first night of class.

Cancellations due to inclement weather will be announced on KDKA Radio and TV, WTAE TV and WPXI TV by 3 p.m. As weather conditions vary from locality to locality, the decision to attend class rests with the student.

Automotive Technology

Auto Body

Basic and advanced methods in auto body repairs, restoration, collision, reconditioning, mig welding, rust proofing and base coat and clear coat single stage refinishing.  Care and use of hand tools.  Students permitted to work on personal cars on a scheduled basis

Class held Tuesday and Thursday evening from 6 - 10 p.m. beginning September 23 for a total of 60 hours. Tuition $230

 

Enhanced Emissions Inspector Certification

This course is designed by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation to provide initial certification for emissions inspectors.  Class includes instruction in inspection procedures, written testing and computer based tactile examination. Offered October and April. Call for registration forms and class schedule.

Next class scheduled to begin October 21. 

Class hours 5:30 - 9:30 p.m. for four evenings totaling 16 hours.

Class fee $140 includes reference manual, instruction, certification written

and computer based test and scoring.

 

Enhanced Emissions Inspector Re-certification

This course designed by Pennsylvania Department of Transportation runs for 4 hours one evening.  The class includes instruction in the latest changes in the Emissions Inspection Regulations and the written test for re-certification. Call for registration forms and class schedule. Class is offered frequently.

Class scheduled for August 26 and September 23.

Call for additional dates in October, November and December.

Class hours 5:30 - 9:30 p.m. for one evening totaling 4 hours.

Class fee $70 includes reference manual, instruction and test fee.

 

State Safety Inspector Certification

A sixteen-hour class that covers all of the rules, regulations, tools, and procedures for the safety inspection of cars, and light trucks.  State required equipment and regulations are discussed along with demonstrations.  Class fee includes instruction, written examination, and tactile exam.   Reference manual is additional charge.  Student must possess a valid driver's license and be at least 18 years of age. Offered February, April, and September. Additional hours for motorcycles and heavy trucks.

Class hours range from 17- 25 hours depending upon certifications.

Next class is scheduled to begin September 8.

Enhanced Vehicle Safety Inspector and Document Reviewer Testing

Testing opportunity for those individuals who already possess a valid state safety inspector license and want to be licensed to inspect reconstructed vehicles. Applicants for the document Reviewer Test do not need to possess a state safety inspector license. For additional information consult the self study materials. Applicants must prepare for the test using the self study materials available on line at www.dmv.state.pa.us . Call for dates and times of testing.

This one hour test is proctored by PennDOT approved instructors, however, no instruction is offered for this certification. The fee is $40.

 

Computer Aided Drafting

Computer Aided Drafting

Provides basic instruction in computer aided drafting from Autodesk, Inc. The student will begin with the foundations of drafting principles using AutoCAD 2008 and will be exposed to all the basic commands of creating and editing geometric shapes. Students will work at their own pace in a hands-on classroom environment.

Solid Modeling

This course teaches the basic concepts of a 3-D solid modeling program by combining Cartesian Coordinate applications with the parametric applications of Inventor to create 3-D models and technical drawings.

Class is held on Thursday evenings beginning September 25 from 6- 10 p.m.

for a total of 30 hours. Tuition is $115. Textbook is an additional student cost.

 

Computer Science

Introduction to Computers

Using handouts and class time, learn the basics: standard parts and features, cursor, window and file manipulations and computer security and care. You will discover the World Wide Web through Internet Explorer, create documents and simple spreadsheets with Word and Excel and send and receive Email.

Class is held on Thursday evening beginning September 25 from 6 - 10 p.m.

for a total of 24 hours.   Tuition is $100.

 

Basics of Microsoft Office - Master the Web, Word and Excel

Packed with useful informaton for the intermediate user, this course is designed to enhance computer skills with Windows XP and Office XP to produce more complicated documents, speadsheets and Emails. In addition, tips and tricks to save time on the Internet.

Class is held on Tuesday evening beginning September 23 from 6-10 p.m.

for a total 36 hours.   Tuition is $125.   Textbook is an additional cost.

 

Exploring the Internet

Become a better net user in one month. Learn Internet terms and standards, how to better navigate and search the Internet. Manage favorite addresses, download from and upload to the Internet. Learn to use more complex Email features.

Class is held on Wednesday evening beginning September 23 from 6 -9 p.m.

for a total of 12 hours.   Tuition is $50.

 

 

Construction Trades

Bricklaying

Provides the student with an introduction to masonry tools and equipment, mortar mixture, and basic bricklaying, jointing, and pointing. Instruction also includes site preparation, foundations and footings.

Class is held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings beginning September 23 from 6 -10 p.m. for a total of 60 hours.  Tuition is $230.

 

Carpentry

Instruction in fundamentals of building construction, use of hand tools and rough framing, interior finishing and layout work.

Class is held on Wednesday evenings beginning September 24 from 6 -10 p.m.

for a total of 52 hours. Tuition is $210. Textbook is an additional cost.

 

Home Plumbing Repairs

Basic instruction on various home repairs including how to make repairs on water tubing, drains, stack lines and faucets, clear blockages in a drain or sewer and cut and install new sections of sewer and water service lines.

        Class is held on Tuesday evenings beginning September 23 from 6-8 p.m.

        for a total of 20 hours.  Tuition is $80.00.  Textbook is an additional cost.

 

Plumbing Installation

Students will learn how to size a plumbing system, install plumbing fixtures including layout and roughing in of water and drain lines.

Class is held on Thursday evenings beginning September 25 from 6-9 p.m.

for a total of 39 hours. Tuition is $150. Textbook is an additional cost.

 

Electrical Technology

Basic Residential Wiring

Provides instruction in the National Electric code, theory and installation of residential wiring.

Class is held on Wednesday evenings beginning September 24 from 6 -10 p.m.

Industrial Wiring Fundamentals

Covers the industrial safety, tools, instruments, electrical symbols, and control language. Also included are print reading, motor starters, control circuitry, transformers, power distribution and basic conduit bending . Some electrical background is helpful.

6 -10 p.m. for a toal of 60 hours.   Tuition is $230. Textbook is an additional cost.

 

Programmable Logic Control

For the technician who needs to know how to program, operate and troubleshoot PLC equipment. Course includes terminology, installation, maintenance and troubleshooting procedures that are common to all manufacturers. Classroom equipment is Allen Bradley PLC-5 Trainer and Compact Logic Trainer with RS Logic 5, RS Logic 5000 and RSLinx software.

Class is held on Thursday evenings beginning September 25 from 6 - 10 p.m.

ABC Electrical Apprenticeship Related Training Class

Related Classroom training for year 2 apprentices. Classes held September through April. 153 hours of instruction per year in cooperation with the Western Pennsylvania chapter of the Associated Builders and Contractors.

Health Occupations

 

Techniques of Medical Billing with Computer Applications

Course includes medical terminology, ICD-9 and CPT coding, legal concepts of billing and all medical insurances.  Learn to bill manually and by computer.  Students must purchase three textbooks. The approximate cost of the textbooks is $200.

Class is held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings beginning September 23

from 6 - 9:30 p.m. for a total of 100 hours. Tuition is $350. Textbooks are additional student expense.

 

Heating and Air Conditioning

Heating

Fundamentals and maintenance of gas, oil and electric forced air heating systems. Includes wiring on control circuits, both low and line voltage and information on energy conservation

Class is held on Tuesday evening beginning September 23 from 6-10 p.m.

Air Conditioning

Provides instruction in understanding, diagnosing, and repairing residential type air conditioners and refrigeration equipment.

Basic Sheet Metal for HVAC

Learn how to fabricate and layout sheet metal and duct work.

           Class is held on Wednesday evening beginning September 24 from 6-10 p.m.

ACCA/PCT Refrigerant Transition and Recovery Certification

Instruction and Testing for HVAC technicians includes three types of certification and universal certification. Training manual required at an additional cost. 

8 hours. Course will be offered in Spring 2009.

 

Industry-Related

Safety Training

A 10 hour course promoting the importance of safety in all situations. Students develop a mindset and learn valuable skills. couse Completers receive a wallet card that will confirm that they have ompleted basic safety training needed in the workplace. The course will be taught by an OSHA General Industry Outreach Trainer.

Class is held on Wednesday evenings beginning October 22 from 6 - 8:30 p.m

for a total of 10 hours.   Tuition is $50.

 

Hydraulics/Pneumatics

Basic knowledge of fluid power transmission systems and a practical understanding of equipment sing working models, cutaways, slides, workbooks, and hands on experience

Class is held on Wednesday evenings beginning September 24 from 6 -1 0 p.m.

Small Gas Engine Repair

Basic engine overhaul and tune up of small gasoline engines

Machine Trades

Machine Trades - Milling

An intro to safety, blueprint reading, bench work, measuring, and operation of basic milling machines. Designed to develop an understanding of machining processes and to improve your present skills. Participants will be prepared to test for the NIMS Level I Milling Credential. (NIMS Registration and Testing is an option for students. The fee is an additional student expense).

Class is held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings beginning September 23 from 6-10 p.m.

for a total of 100 hours.  Tuition is $350.  Textbook is an additional cost.

 

Machine Trades - Turning Between Centers

Designed to develop an understanding of machining processes and to improve your present skills, this class includes an intro to safety, blueprint reading, bench work, measuring and operation of basic lathes, speeds and feeds, work holding devices and basic set up, lathe components and turning operations. Participants will be prepared to test for the NIMS Level I Turning Between Centers Credential. Class begins February. (NIMS Registration and Testing is an option for students. The fee is an additional student expense)

Class will be offered Spring 2009.

 

Introduction to Computerized Numerical Control

Learn what CNC is, how it works, and what it can do. Includes axes of machine motion, function of control units, plus coordinate system, positioning and contouring, and tooling and work holding. Prior machining experience required. Programming will be taught using EdgeCam software. CNC machines include Bridgeport Mill, Sharp 1118HCNC Lathe and a Haas CNC Simulator.

NTMA Machinist Apprentice Related Training Program

Related Classroom training for year 1- 4  apprentices.  Classes held September through June.  6- 10 p.m.

Telecommunications

 

Intro to Networking

Provides knowledge and skills for entry level technicians in the network cabling industry. Focusing on tool use and construction techniques, industry standards, troubleshooting and repair.

Class is held on Thursday evenings beginning on September 25 from 6-9 p.m. for a total of 30 hours.  Tuition is $110.  Kit is an additional cost at approximately $100.

 

Intro to Fiber Optics

Provides knowledge and skills for an entry-level technician in the network cabling industry with a concentration in fiber optics.  Focus on fiber optic theory, tool use, construction techniques, characteristics of fiber optic components, troubleshooting and repair.  Prior networking background helpful.

Class is held on Thursday evenings beginning September 25 from 6-10 p.m. for a total of 40 hours.  Tuition is $150.  Kit is an additional cost at approximately $200

 

 

Welding

Welding I

Teaches the fundamentals of electric and oxyacetylene welding and contains actual welding practice. This course is designed for those who need an understanding of how welding applies to their occupation.

Welding II

Mig and tig welding of aluminum, carbon steel and shielded metal arc welding. This course provides practice for the AWS certification test. Test is not offered at CWCTC. Welding I is a prerequisite for this course.
