Cosmetology

 

Course Description:

 

The Cosmetology Program at Central Westmoreland Career and Technology Center is designed to prepare each student for a career as a licensed Cosmetologist upon graduation. The students will be provided the opportunity to practice their skills in a simulated salon environment. Students will work with mannequins, fellow students and visiting patrons.

The Cosmetology Program is a 3-year course which involves a minimum of 1250 hours of competency based instruction. The Pennsylvania State Board of Cosmetology mandates 1250 hours of training to register for Professional State Licensure so excellent attendance is very important in this program.

 

Units of Study:

Some units of study include: Haircutting, manicuring, hair coloring, facials, wet hairstyling, thermal hair styling, acrylic nails, permanent waving, scalp treatments, shampooing and conditioning, sterilization and sanitation, chemical relaxers, employment skills, receptionist duties, anatomy, related math and PA Cosmetology rules and regulations.

 

Grading procedures:

Students are graded as follows:

  • 1/3 Theory,1/3 practical skills and 1/3 daily grade


Suggested Related Courses

The following classes are related to cosmetology and should be seriously considered. they are; math, biology, general science, and general business courses.


Student Requirements

Students must, at all times, wear a white uniform that conforms to CWCTC's individual standards, wear white work shoes approved by CWCTC, complete 1250 hours of instruction, and pass the state board exam at the end of the school year.


Student Costs

Students are required to pay for the following items; the students uniform, shoes, cosmetology kit, and state board fee.

Occupations that are commonly held by graduates are; hair stylists, make-up artists, manicurist, beauty products salesperson, manufacturer representative, research assistant, state board inspector, teacher, trainer, scalp and hair technician, salon owner, and a demonstrator.
