Construction Trades Technology
Course Description
Building Construction Technology is a competency based program open to all students grades 9 to 12 and adults. Skilled building construction mechanics must have general knowledge in many skill areas so that they may perform repairs on existing facilities and aid in the construction of new buildings. Basic skills include plumbing, carpentry, electricity, painting, wall covering, and masonry. Students are given the fundamentals of related math and blueprint reading. You will receive instruction on the use of hand and power tools. Students are given adequate time to perform quality work, and the proper care and use of a wide variety of construction tools and machinery. Personal safety and overall job performance is stressed continually throughout the program. Prospective students should like to work with their hands and have a desire to work in various construction areas. Upon graduation, students that have successfully completed the course can confidently seek employment with the maintenance staff of an institution, work in a related construction area, or become self-employed.
Units of Study
Some of the units of study include plumbing, carpentry, electricity, masonry, wall covering, blueprint reading, related math, and painting.
Grading Procedure
Grading is comprised of 40% for classroom instruction, tests , quizzes, and 60% for shop work and safe behavior. Students entering this class should have good math skills and some experience in industrial art, mechanical drawing, or drafting.
Student Requirements
To pass this course you must attend regularly, wear a shop uniform, wear hard soled shoes, complete a minimum number of shop projects, and have a tape measure and pencil.
Student Costs
Some of the student costs for the shop include a shop uniform, work boots, and a 25 foot tape measure.

Some Skills You Will Learn
Some of the skills you will learn are framing, exterior and interior covering, roughin and the installation of plumbing fixtures, preparing surface areas for painting, install and repair electrical circuits, install a hot water tank, install drywall and finish, construct various brick and block walls, maintain and clean heating equipment, layout a building and foundation.
