Automotive Technology

Course Description

This program prepares students to become automotive technicians who are trained in the latest automotive serivce technologies and methods. Courses include fundamental technical training on current model vehicles and components with emphasis on the latest developments in engine repair, automotive electrical and electronic systems, and emission control systems.

Program Elements

Automotive Technology is an exciting, fast-paced and dynamic field. Students will be trained using the latest curriculum and cutting-edge equipment. All instructors are ASE Certified Master Technicians. The training program is certified by the Nation Automotive Technician Education Foundation (NATEF), which ensures the best possible guidance and resources in the automotive field. Students will be instructed in the following areas: Personal/Shop safety, professional development, hand tools, shop equipment, basic/advanced electrical systems, engine repair, ABS bake systems, hydraulics, steering, suspension, alignment, and basic/advanced engine performance. Qualifying students may have the opportunity to participate in the Automotive Youth Educational System (AYES) as a new car dealership intern. In their final year, students may earn Pennsylvania State Safety/Emission Licenses. Additionally, our Cooperative Education Program provides a structured school-to-work opportunity for many seinor students.


Units of Study

Our Automotive Technology Program uses curriculum prescribed by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (A.S.E.). The units of study are: Engine Performance, Electrical/Electronics, Steering & Suspension, Brakes, Engine Repair, Heating & Air Conditioning, Automatic Transmission, and Manual Drive Train & Axles. Business Management and Shop Safety/Maintenance are included in the curriculum.

Students enrolled in teh Automotive Technology program will have many career paths to choose from. Some are as follows:

Places of Employment

New or used vehicle dealership, independent garage/repair facility, automotive repair chain stores (Pep Boys, NTB, Monroe, etc.), automotive parts distributor, self-employed - owner/operator of a repair facility, related industry - heavy equipment, aviation, recreational, insurance.

Job Titles

Master Automobile Technician, automobile technician, shop foreman, team leader, service writer, service manager, owner.

Post Secondary Schooling

General Motors - ASEP Program, Ford - ASSET Program, Chrysler - CAP Program, BMW - STEP Program, Toyota - T-10, Rosedale Technical Institute, Universal Technical Institute, WyoTech, Penn Technical College.

Earnings

Earnings in the Automotive Technology field depend on the skill and knowledge level of the technician. Experienced technicians in the automobile field have the potential to earn up to or over $90,000 yearly.

Apprenticeship Center

Students are offered a chance to compete for AYES (Automotive Youth Education System), an apprenticeship type program that trains students in auto dealerships. The program is offered to second-year students and uncludes tools, training, and pay. Third and fourth year students are elgible for the Capstonic Co-op program, another site-based educational program. Students are also trained for PA State Inspection and Emmission Control Certification , and recieve credit toward initial ASE Certification.


Student Requirements

Students must provide a uniform, work shoes, and safety glasses. Regular attendance is required for full credit.

Steps to Success

The Automotive Technology program is a competency-based program open to all students in grades 9 through 12. To be successful, students must aquire and apply skills and knowledge or the trade. Development or professional charactersistics such as attendance, attitude, appearance, communication skills and work ethic are essential. Students must supply safety glasses, work uniform, and work shoes. Successful completion of this program provides a one-year workplace credit and prepares the graduate for the ASE exams to become a Certified Automotive Technican.
